Data from the 2002-2003 ND State Assessment and Bismarck Public Schools standards for Science, which are based from Project 2061, were considered for this project. A meaningful learning experience for students that involves community service is also included.

The lowest area of need according the ND State assessment in Reading was Standard 2- Engage in the reading process. I decided to work on Reading a variety of materials. The students will be using a variety of resources to gain the information about their species. The lowest area of need in Language Arts was Standard 3- Engage in the writing process. I will be focusing on Editing to improve comprehension along with using strategies to write for a variety of purposes and audiences.

Students will be involved with our local zoo. They will learn and understand parts of the animal world as they choose a species to observe and explore as they study the variety of things that are involved for that animal's survival. They will also see their part and what they can do to help by taking an active role in their community.
